What is the interpretation of drawings? What are the steps in interpreting drawings? Why I am Kids drawing analyzer for twenty years?

Updated: Mar 23

My name is Koby Avraham, and for twenty years I have been Kids drawing analyzer.

Unfortunately, the field of interpreting drawings is still not well-known worldwide, some tend to see Kids drawing analysis as a sort of card reading or coffee reading. Despite the fact that for decades this field of Kids drawing analysis has been researched in academies all over the world. The best researchers renew every year with new research, strengthening the field with their research results.

For twenty years now, I have been Kids drawing analyzer, adolescents, and adults. In recent years, I feel very much like a detective of drawings. Unfortunately, Kids drawing analysis are still not accepted as evidence in court, even though it is almost certain to determine the state of the children, the events they are going through, their mental and emotional state, but as I mentioned, the fact that we use the term ‘almost certainly’ is actually casting doubt.

I disagree, in my opinion, it is possible to use the Kids drawing analysis also as legal evidence. Especially if it is supported by professionals who deal with the psyche and emotion.

So how did I get to this field and why have I been dealing with it for twenty years?

I’ll start with how? About fifty years ago, at the age of 10, a boy at the school I studied at locked me in a room at the school, tied my hands, and sexually assaulted me. In those days, the situation in my parents’ house was very difficult, my father had a brain event and my mother was busy with daily survival. So I actually had no one to talk to. I was afraid to tell about it at school because of the insult and especially because of the fear of the boy’s reaction. I couldn’t process what happened, and the difficulty grew and accumulated, the injury became deeper every day that passed.

I jump in the time tunnel thirty years ahead to the age of forty.

As part of my studies, I was exposed to the field of interpreting children’s drawings. The moment I understood the meaning of the drawing or more than that, the story that hides behind every drawing, a story that comes straight from the subconscious of the painter, I understood the power of the tool, I understood the meaning of interpreting the drawings to save children, adolescents, and even adults from dark places they are in, a tool that can bring them out to the light. I understood that I could pass this tool on to parents so that they could see and understand the deepest internal difficulties of their children. For me, interpreting drawings is a mission and therefore I am here, for twenty years. Researching, learning, innovating, teaching, lecturing, and as a result, for over 20 years I have been saving children all over the world.

So what is actually the interpretation of children’s drawings?

What are the steps in Kids drawing analysis?

Let’s start with the fact that an Kids drawing analysis deals with the psyche, emotion, the lives of children, adolescents, and adults. This means that a drawing interpreter requires professional responsibility, professional knowledge, professional professionalism, learning, and above all, professional and personal ethics.

it is a language of symbols and graphic signs whose interpretation is identical in every language.

For example, in any language that I ask to draw a heart, everyone will draw the heart in the same universal shape, the same can be said for example about a drawing of an arrow, the graphic sign will be identical everywhere in the world.

There are several rules that should not be crossed.

The first of them is that we cannot draw conclusions based on one drawing alone. We need to see as many drawings as possible and if possible also drawings from the past. We need to remember that our interpretation is about what we see in the drawing and it is actually a reflection of the feelings of the painter at that point in time when he drew. It reflects how he sees reality at that point in time. And it does not necessarily reflect reality over time. To understand the meaning, I will tell you the following story “A child wakes up in the morning and he asks his mother to prepare him for school a slice of bread with chocolate. The mother refuses and insists no. She explains to the child why not, the child argues and eventually leaves for school with other food his mother prepared for him. Angry, upset, and furious, he arrives at the class and the teacher asks the children to honor Family Day to draw their family. The child, from his feelings and emotions at the point in time of the drawing, when he is angry and upset at his mother, draws her as a large, scary, threatening, and violent figure. The teacher who sees the drawing is worried.

Here it is, the best mother in the world, the most delicate in the world who cares about her son’s health, is drawn as a violent and scary figure.

Here is our responsibility as interpreters of drawings to act responsibly and professionally .

Do not determine or draw conclusions based on one drawing and we will ask for more drawings to understand the situation in reality. Combining the information we receive from additional drawings will give us a better database so that we can aim for a certain line of thought in our drawing investigation.

Analyzing a child’s drawing involves several steps and considerations:

First impression:

The first look at the child’s picture can sometimes reveal what he is feeling. Be impressed by the atmosphere in the drawing, what is our intuition from the appearance of the drawing. It is very important to use intuition. It is important to stay as objective as possible, not to be biased in this or that direction because of our acquaintance with the painter or our sensitivity to the event that the drawing deals with, like in my case, I need to be much more responsible because of the sexual assault event I went through in my childhood.

Colors:

The colors used in the drawing can provide insights into the child’s feelings and personality.

Also, the continuation please: For example, colors that tend more towards a pastel hue or that are applied softly indicate a calmer and more emotional character.

Completeness of the drawing:

If a child leaves their drawings incomplete or draws light hesitant lines, if he hides parts of the drawing or erases a figure in the drawing for example, it has great significance in interpreting drawings and in our interpretation of the situation.

Location:

The location of the element in the drawing has many very different meanings, they vary if the element is drawn on the right side or on the left, up or down, what is the size of the element in relation to the rest of the elements.

Details:

Pay special attention to all the details, in a tree for example pay attention to the structure of the roots, the thickness of the roots, their depth, the thickness of the trunk, whether it changes its thickness, whether there are wounds in the tree trunk, whether there is a spiral in the tree, where it is located, what is the direction of the spiral’s drawing, whether there are broken branches along the trunk, the structure of the crown, the structure of the leaves, their density, the thickness of the branches, their splitting, whether there are flowers on the tree, whether there are fruits, what is their size, color, where are the fruits located, what is their distribution. Context:

You need to take into account the age of the painter, the graphic motor skills, the intensities of the lines, the pace of drawing the lines, the shapes of the lines, the intensity of the lines, where they are located in the drawings on the paper.

Professional interpretation:

As I have already elaborated at the beginning, professional interpretation requires the drawing interpreter to be responsible, professional, up-to-date, and professional.

Remember, these techniques are very useful, especially with children, as drawing is a simple and fun activity. Through drawing, we can identify if children have certain problems; it is an excellent expression tool especially for children who have difficulty speaking, expressing themselves, and sharing.

If you want more information, want to learn the subject, I will be happy to help you understand how to be a professional, sensitive, and professional Kids drawing analyzer.”
