"What Does It Mean When a Child Draws a Person with Large Hands?"

“My child drew a picture of a person with large hands. What does it mean?”

Let me start with a short story.

Last Tuesday, Yossi, an 8-year-old boy, sat in his room and drew a picture. He drew his father and mother, but with a strange detail - his father’s hands were unusually large. When he finished, he brought the drawing to his mother to see.

Yossi’s mother was impressed by the drawing. She asked Yossi why he drew his father’s hands so large. Yossi looked at the drawing and said, “Dad always uses his hands to help me. He holds me when I’m tired, fixes my bike, and teaches me to play basketball. His hands are the strongest and biggest there are.”

His mother understood that Yossi’s drawing was an expression of his feelings and worldview. She realized that the large hands of his father in the drawing represented his importance in Yossi’s life. She hugged Yossi and told him that she was very proud of him. Since then, Yossi’s drawing has been hanging in a central place on the refrigerator.

Many children’s drawings contain figures with large hands, sometimes they draw very large figures. Sometimes just one large hand. We need to examine things in depth, according to several rules that drawing interpreters or drawing detectives use.

First, we need to understand what the child’s motor-graphic ability is. It is very possible that a motor difficulty or the condition and strength of his muscles are the cause that caused the distortion of the shape of the hands or the size of the hands.

When a child draws a person with large hands, it may indicate a sense of aggression or some enemy. The size of the figures in a child’s drawing can represent the importance or significance that the child gives to those people.

The story that opened the blog shows us that there can be different reasons for drawing large hands, they do not always teach about bad things, they do not always teach about violence. Sometimes, as in the story, they can describe the good things that Dad does for the child, just as described in the story.

However, it is important to remember that children’s drawings can be influenced by a variety of factors, it is always advisable to talk to the child about his drawing in order to understand his point of view.

In order to determine such and other things about a drawing, we need more drawings, we need to verify our fears if they exist.

There are other symbols in addition to large hands that teach us and reinforce our fears about signs of violence, I will mention only two more signs, large and sharp teeth and also wide shoulders.

As mentioned, it is forbidden to rush to draw such or another conclusion, one must act responsibly and professionally first.
